The Cold War provided the backdrop for the events of 1968, whether in Vietnam, during the presidential campaign or in the space race. As 1968 came to a close, the Apollo 8 mission sent three astronauts into the moon's orbit for the first time, and their live Christmas Eve broadcast reading from Genesis was watched by millions worldwide. "You saved 1968," read one telegram to the crew.

Our guests are Elizabeth Cobbs – historian, documentary filmmaker and Hoover Institution fellow – and Mark Kramer, program director of Harvard University's Project on Cold War Studies.
